Today is a sad day as the man known simply as Megatron has informed the Lions that he intends to retire. With this announcement, the league is losing one of its best players. Since his rookie season, Calvin Johnson has wowed fans with amazing catches and dominating performances similar to the days of Jerry Rice. After being dubbed Megatron by former teammate Roy Williams, Johnson continued to set the league ablaze with every impossible catch. It is quite possible that Johnson is the best athlete to ever play the position of football. At 6'5" and 236 pounds, Johnson ran a blazing 4.35 40 to go with his amazing strength. His size to speed combo has never before been seen at the position and may never be seen again.
This brings to question, why did Megatron decide to hang it all up? After all, he still had a pretty dominant campaign in 2015 with 88 catches for 1214 yards and 9 touchdowns. Those are good numbers. For that to be a down year is incredible as players are usually having a great year to put up numbers like that. So why retire while still putting up great numbers? One reason could be the same reason that Barry Sanders did. The stress of losing takes a toll on an athlete whose sole purpose is to bring a victory to his city. Being the superstar of your team only adds more pressure and stress to the equation as Megatron became the face of a franchise that could not win despite having immense talent. Johnson can have grown tired of all of this pressure and decided to leave while on top. The pressure could have taken the fun out of the game to him and caused him to lose desire to compete.
The other possibility is that the injuries in Johnson's career have taken a bigger toll than any of us have realized. Johnson has dealt with many painful injuries including a nagging hamstring injury that has continually caused him to have to miss games. Injuries can get into a player's head and cause him to second guess himself. Johnson may have felt the pain from these injuries and decided to retire before he got a major injury like a torn ACL or a ruptured Achilles. This would be a good explanation for retiring while still technically in his athletic prime at the age of 30.
No matter what the cause is, the league is losing when of its best players and it is a sad day. Many fans have tuned in just to see what kind of catch Megatron would pull off on that day. One thing is clear at this point, Johnson is leaving the league as one of the best to ever play the game. He has broken records and brought many fans to their feet with his performances. For this, let me be the first to thank Megatron for his amazing career and to wish him the best in the future. Now lets enjoy one last look at his incredible career.
